Verhofstadt message to European leaders: Europe needs reform, not rejection

Guy Verhofstadt calls on EU leaders, especially Angela Merkel, David Cameron, Fredrik Reinfeldt and Mark Rutte meeting yesterday and today in Harpsund (Sweden), to focus on a clear vision of how the EU, through its economies of scale, can be a catalyst for growth in the years ahead.

"In a series of articles published in several national newspapers,Verhofstadt sets out his vision on where the EU should be heading over the next five years: "I am convinced that the EU needs less regulation and more common policies. These common policies should not be designed or perceived as a diktat from Brussels, but as important common objectives that the EU institutions and Member States must achieve together.”

The focus for the next five years should be on strengthening our internal market. This means getting rid of remaining borders and administrative obstacles that are holding back our key economic sectors as well as completing the missing links in our digital infrastructure and our European transport and energy networks through innovative financial instruments with the backing of the EIB, ECB and European Commission. We need to strengthen our internal market, not by enacting overly detailed rules and regulations but by considering what common policies we are missing and still need to develop jointly in order to remain competitive."

“Given the devastating levels of unemployment, especially amongst young people in many parts of Europe, the EU should be active in developing a scheme to promote mobility and assist in matching skills to job vacancies.” “The political programme that I outlined as candidate for the Commission Presidency contains all the main ingredients for a new political agenda that will set Europe on the right path to growth. We don’t need a European ‘superstate’ but we do need a Europe that works and one that focuses more on where it can bring real added value.”
