Jean Marie Le Pen says migrants should be eradicated with Ebola. This reminds us of the darkest pages in our history.
On Wednesday, at an election rally in Marseille, Jean Marie Le Pen suggested that immigration could be "solved by Monseigneur Ebola within three months", referring to the deadly virus that has caused many deaths in West Africa.
Guy Verhofstadt, Group leader of the Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament, reacted strongly to reports of Le Pen's remarks by calling it "sickening and revolting". "They remind us of the darkest pages in our European history. Ironically, he underlines the need for a stronger Europe that strengthens human rights and unequivocally defends its values of tolerance and equality."
"Moreover, M. Le Pen's statement proves that the Front National has not really changed its spots since his daughter took over the leadership of the party. It remains the same racist, xenophobic group of people with which Mr. Wilders and the "Vlaams Belang" cooperate. We have to stand up against these dangerous demagogues and rely on a proactive European Commission that acts against such views. These kind of statements are abhorrent by any standard and cannot be defended by the right to freedom of speech."
