The EU is an essential tool to build a more prosperous and secure future. But it is by no means perfect, and must be significantly reformed if it is to deliver for its citizens. The EU is often too bureaucratic and hampers businesses with excessive regulation. There are still too many key markets such as telecoms, transport and energy policy that need further liberalisation. By opening up new markets in Europe and overseas, we can create new jobs, stimulate innovation and lower prices for consumers. And by strengthening EU cooperation in key areas we can strengthen civil liberties both at home and abroad, and lead a the global fight against climate change.
The UK is one of the most influential member states in the Union. As an engaged member it can be a driving force for reform, as it has shown in the past. The Liberal Democrats, as the only truly pro-European party in the UK, are best placed to deliver this reform along with their Liberal allies across Europe. Together, we can build a more competitive, efficient and accountable EU.
